The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
