A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
