Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – genuinely, no previous leader would have imagined – independently wrecking major areas of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.

As bewildering as it is to witness the leader try to upend the traditional concept regarding democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of animosity who blesses specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Jesus from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America might have little sense of him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. The evident and clear reality that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the impoverished is what has always made the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but owing to its inherent radicalness demanding to be controlled. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Finest Within Us
