Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
